As we mark the beginning of a new year, my heart goes out to friends in China who are suffering under the shadow of the novel coronavirus.

新年伊始，當知曉中國朋友們處于新型冠狀病毒的陰霾下，我的心便同你們牽系在一起。

The world is wary with fear of the virus lurking in the darkness.

潛伏在黑暗中的病毒令整個世界恐懼。

However, I can say without any doubt that I see hope in this dire situation.

但是，我可以堅定地說，我從嚴峻的形勢下依舊看到了希望。

This is because the Chinese people are united in one and fearlessly fighting against the virus.

這份希望源于中國人民的團結(jié)一致，源于與病毒的無畏抗爭。

As a friend of China, I would like to extend my deepest respect to the 1.4 billion Chinese people who are fighting against the epidemic; and sincere condolences to those who lost their lives because of the virus.

作為中國的朋友，我要向正與病毒抗爭的14億中國人民致以最誠摯的敬意；向因病毒失去生命的人表示深切的哀悼。

President Xi Jinping has more than once emphasized the priceless value of life. I firmly believe that the Chinese value of life and their wisdom accumulated for the past five thousand years will enable China to overcome this epidemic.

2018年11月，博鰲亞洲論壇理事長、第八任聯(lián)合國秘書長潘基文先生首次來訪清華大學，出席由清華大學全球可持續(xù)發(fā)展研究院（Institute for Sustainable Development Goals of Tsinghua University）主辦“新文明城市與可持續(xù)發(fā)展論壇”，并發(fā)表《為可持續(xù)的世界而創(chuàng)造新文明城市》主題演講。在論壇上，清華大學公共管理學院、潘基文世界公民中心（Ban Ki-moon Centre for Global Citizens）、韓國與時齋研究院（Yeosijae Future Consensus Institute）三方機構(gòu)簽署合作備忘錄，為未來開展與城市可持續(xù)發(fā)展領域相關的研究工作、人才培養(yǎng)，學術(shù)交流奠定了重要基礎。潘基文先生在最近兩年，多次關心支持清華大學全球可持續(xù)發(fā)展研究院建設和發(fā)展，建立長期合作關系。

清華大學全球可持續(xù)發(fā)展研究院(Institute for Sustainable Development Goals, Tsinghua University, 英文簡稱為TUSDG，中文簡稱為“清華全球SDG研究院”) 是清華大學批準成立的校級非營利性科研機構(gòu)，依托清華大學公共管理學院，并聯(lián)合相關院系開展教學研究工作。
