Although an accountant by profession (FCCA), I have been an executive and private company owner in the media industry for the past 30 years. Most recently and since 2012, I have been Managing Director of Cartoon Saloon, one of Europe’s preeminent animation studios based in Ireland. Prior to this I was with a number of media companies in the US and also was the owner of an animation production studio in Ireland.Cartoon Saloon, based in Kilkenny Ireland is one of Europe’s best know animation studios that develops, produced and exploits original animated audio-visual content. It produces feature films for cinema, TV series and experimental short films and the studio is most know for the fact that all of its feature films and one of its short films have been nominated for Academy Awards (Oscars). The studio has been the winner of major awards from the Shanghai International Film Festival and China’s International Cartoon and Animation Festival in Hangzhou and we also have participated in both events as awards jury members and in providing keynote talks.With 5 Oscar nominations and many many other awards for the uniqueness of its work, Cartoon Saloon is best know for the craft in its ‘hand drawn’ animation style with films like The Secret of Kells, Song of the Sea, The Breadwinner and Wolfwalkers and with its latest film, My Fathers Dragon launching later this year and all of which except The Secret of Kells have been released in the cinema and on streaming services in China. Its best-known TV shows include Puffin Rock, the pre-school show of two seasons which is available for viewing on Tencent and has a Puffin Rock feature film releasing in the first quarter of next year.Cartoon Saloon also co-owns Lighthouse Studios also in Kilkenny, Ireland (co-owned with Mercury Filmworks from Canada) and this studios specializes in third party animations service work, most notably the recent Cup Head TV series and the recently released Bobs Burgers feature film.
